A Emotional Occasion when Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a quality coach that understands the game back to front, which is what matters most.

"But, as the Blues' pioneering African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this news fails to move me."

These were the words expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in April 1982.

This week, the club hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, as their next head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a multi-club ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show only 12 black managers – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played locally, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a family that fights for what's right… it is powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Statistics Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight boss of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across English football is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, research by the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to figures from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of his appointment as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent present within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time English head coaches presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's other big five divisions regarding homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English managers from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating to young English coaches in the system to witness an individual land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint peaked with a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for his services to tackling inequality in football and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability and said roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that significant under-representation leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the Premier League's pioneering African heritage boss in Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.

Elliott has since worked in several executive roles, among them the Football Association's diversity and inclusion board|
