Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

In the teaser reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
